Hello, and welcome to the 12th edition of this season’s Predicting the Dream Team brought to you by me, FPL Texan. In this article, we preview FPL Gameweek 16 of the 2021/2022 season.
In this series, I go head-to-head each week with Fantasy Football Fix to see who can select the best team of the week, their algorithm or myself. It is a classic battle of man vs. machine!
Let’s take a look at the results
Fantasy Football Fix Algorithm
Moving onto Gameweek 16, let’s take a look at Fix’s Team.
Fix’s Predicted Team of the Week
Please note that this team is accurate as of Thursday 9th December. However, the algorithm team updates right up until the deadline with news from press conferences and potential injuries.
Therefore, to stay completely up to date with the algorithm team, you can check it yourself just before the deadline at FantasyFootballFix.com.
Next, we will look at my predicted team of the week, and the reasons behind each decision.
Texan’s Predicted Team of the Week
DAVID DE GEA
- Price: £5.1m
- Ownership: 7.5%
- Projected Points: 4.9 Points
De Gea makes his debut in the team of the week this week. Norwich has struggled to get going so far attacking wise this season and are tied for worst xG in the league to date, so a clean sheet could be on the cards for United this week.
- Price: £6.3m
- Ownership: 35.7%
- Projected Points: 5.5 Points
James makes the team of the week again this week. Reece ranks 2nd amongst defenders in the league for xG per 90 at 0.18. He also ranks second for xA per 90 at 0.26. James also ranks third amongst defenders in Big Chances Created per 90 at 0.37.
Reece James is in great attacking form, so he makes the team of the week.
- Price: £8.0m
- Ownership: 38.1%
- Projected Points: 5.8 Points
Trent is in the team of the week again this week with a matchup against Villa. Liverpool has been a strong defence this season, with the 2nd best xGA in the league. Trent also offers phenomenal attacking return potential, ranking 1st in xA per 90 amongst defenders in the league at 0.43, and second in xFPL points per 90 at 7.79.
Trent is in phenomenal attack form, so he’s a must in the team of the week.
- Price: £6.7m
- Ownership: 36.3%
- Projected Points: 5.0 Points
Cancelo is in the defence this week with a matchup against Wolves. City has been one of the best, if not the best, defences in the league again this season with the best xGA in the league by some margin. Cancelo also offers great attacking return potential, ranking 5th in xA per 90 at 0.14 amongst defenders and first in successful final third passes at 23.81 per 90.
Cancelo was also rested in the CL midweek, so he will be fresh and ready for a big haul this week against Wolves.
- Price: £5.6m
- Ownership: 9.8%
- Projected Points: 6.2 Points
Alonso rounds out the defence and my double Chelsea defence this week. Leeds is missing key players Bamford and Phillips due to injury, so there’s a good chance of a Chelsea clean sheet this week. Alonso offers great attacking potential, with an xG per 90 of 0.09, and an xA per 90 of 0.11
With the injuries to Leeds and Alonso’s attacking potential, he makes the team of the week.
MOHAMED SALAH (C)
- Price: £13.0m
- Ownership: 72.5%
- Projected Points: 7.1 Points
Salah is once again my captaincy selection this week. The Liverpool attack has been in phenomenal form, leading the league in xG by some margin. Salah has been on another level this season, with 13 goals and 10 assists through 15 league games. He is second in the league in xG per 90 at 0.67 and is 3rd in xA per 90 at 0.36.
When Salah is in this form, he is a set and forget captain for me, and an absolute lock in the team of the week.
- Price: £7.8m
- Ownership: 22.0%
- Projected Points: 7.0 Points
Jota is in the team of the week this week. Liverpool is the top team in the league for xG so far this season, and Jota has been a major factor in their success, ranking first in the league in xG per 90 at 0.69 and 8th in xA per 90 at 0.29.
With Firmino again out this week, and Jota being fit he is a lock in the team of the week.
- Price: £6.7m
- Ownership: 19.9%
- Projected Points: 4.8 Points
Silva makes his debut in the team of the week this week. He and City go up against a Wolves side that has been middle of the road this season defensively, ranking 8th best in xGA, whilst City has again been superb offensively with the second-best xG in the league. Silva has been vital to City’s success, with an xG per 90 of 0.30 and an xA per 90 of 0.23.
Bernardo has been in fine form this season, and I expect that to continue this week against Wolves.
- Price: £12.3m
- Ownership: 11.0%
- Projected Points: 5.3 Points
Ronaldo is back in the team of the week this week. He goes up against a Norwich side that ranks second-worst for xGA this season. Ronaldo has been in fine form since returning to the PL, ranking first amongst forwards in the league for xG per 90 at 0.64.
With a great matchup against Norwich, CR7 is a must in the team of the week.
- Price: £7.4m
- Ownership: 3.4%
- Projected Points: 6.1 Points
Antonio makes a return to the team of the week this week. Burnley have been middle of the road defensively this season, ranking 8th worst in xGA. Antonio has been in great form this season, leading West Ham in xG per 90 at 0.43 and xA per 90 at 0.31.
Antonio has trailed off a bit in recent weeks for FPL returns, but I think he turns it around this week against Burnley.
- Price: £7.8m
- Ownership: 13.9%
- Projected Points: 4.5 Points
King rounds out the team of the week this week. He faces Brentford, who rank middle of the road in the league for xGA. Jimenez has been a vital part of Watford’s attack this season, ranking first in xG per 90 at 0.53 and third in xA per 90 at 0.20.
King has been off to a surprisingly hot start this season, and I expect it to continue this week against Brentford.
