Now that is out of the way, let’s discuss how we think you should start your Euro 2020 team and when you should use the Wildcard and Limitless Chip…

Before we start, we will let you know the plan that we have in mind. So firstly, we want to build our first team with just Matchday 1 in mind. We then plan to use the Limitless chip in Matchday 2 and then Wildcard in Matchday 3. There are essentially 7 Matchdays in Euro 2020 and it definitely seems the best time to use your chips are during this time. You get unlimited transfers on Matchday 4 (before the round of 16) anyway, so it would be here where you plan for the final stages when you find out which teams will be advancing. Okay, let’s get started…

How should I commence my Fantasy Team?

As we have already mentioned, our main focus for Matchday 1 is to build a team that literally just focuses on the best fixtures for Matchday 1. Why? Well, we plan to use Limitless Chip straight after.

What is the Limitless chip? Well, it’s similar to the ‘Free Hit’ we all know. Limitless gives you the chance to change your squad for one matchday only. When you play it, you get unlimited free transfers for that matchday with no budget restrictions. Once the matchday has finished, your squad will return to how it was before you played Limitless.

The key point to digest here is the fact that there are no budget restrictions when you use the Limitless chip. This means you can build a squad of all premium players essentially, money is no longer an issue for this Matchday. Once we have had a feel of how players have performed on Matchday 1 and we know who starts, we can then more confidently select our players for Matchday 2. Not only that, but depending on the results of Matchday 1, we will know which teams will be fighting for points within the second Matchday.

It’s early days, but here is the team selected by one of the people within our team; @FantasySilva.

The team is not set in stone as the deadline is still over two weeks away with International Friendlies to be played before hand. Once all friendlies have been played, we can better assess which players will be starting and see how much of an impact players are making. Anyway let’s have a look at his current draft:

Here are a few reasons behind his picks:

Like already mentioned above, I simply want to focus on just the Matchday 1 fixtures since I will be using the Limitless chip straight after this so all I have to think about is Matchday 1 at this moment in time.

Considering this, I have selected players who I believe will earn me the most points for Matchday 1. As an example, since Portugal are in the most difficult group in Euro 2020, I probably wouldn’t have considered having Ronaldo in my team. But since Portugal play Hungary in their first fixture, it seems a no brainer that he will most likely get much better-attacking returns as opposed to his subsequent two fixtures.

The 4-4-2 formation might seem a strange one but I have literally thought about a team of XI that will start (hence why my bench isn’t great at all). I will be using the Limitless chip right after in Matchday 2 where I would most likely change to either a 3-5-2 formation or 3-4-3.

On Matchday 3, I plan to use my Wildcard, why? Well, at this point, I will have more of a feel of which players will be starting, which players are in form and I can process some of the stats to plan my moves for this Matchday.

When should I use the Limitless Chip?

As @FantasySilva has already mentioned, we do agree and feel the best time to use this chip is on Matchday 2. Well, what this means is that we can build a completely new team for the first two Matchdays (3 if you plan to use the Wildcard chip in Matchday 3). We believe the best way to gain an advantage in this Euro Fantasy is to commence the first 3 Matchdays as strongly as possible. Within this time, you can get all the differentials and earn some huge points before the round of 16 where more teams will most likely become more ‘templated’.

When should I use my Wildcard?

It probably doesn’t come as a surprise but we feel the best time to use your Wildcard chip is on Matchday 3. If you are using Limitless in Matchday 2 and your Wildcard in Matchday 3, this essentially means you can build a completely fresh squad for the first 3 Matchdays. Not only that but in the Round of 16 (Matchday 4 essentially), you get unlimited transfers anyway, this basically means with this method is that you are picking the best team possible for the first four Matchdays.

During the Group Stages, you get 2 free transfers, 3 free transfer in the Quarter Finals and 5 in both the Semis and Finals. Well, for us, we can’t see a better time to use the chips available within Matchday 2 and 3 as we have proposed.

And other tips to bear in mind with the Euro Fantasy Rules

The best tips we can give are regarding the Captaincy Pick. What majorly differs here from FPL is that we can change the Captain within a Matchday before the Substitution Window. To make this as clear as possible, Turkey plays Italy in Matchday 1 on Friday 11th June. This means you could captain someone from Italy for example and then change it to a team that plays on Saturday 12th June (such as De Bruyne or Lukaku for Belgium). Again, you could change your captain again on the 13th/14th/15th before the match as Matchday 1 starts on the 11th and ends on the 15th. It definitely seems you have to be more proactive during Matchdays than you have to be in FPL. In FPL, your team is set in stone whereas, in Euro 2020, we can make changes as the matchday progresses day by day.

In a nutshell, select a captain from a team playing on the first game of a matchday. That way, if he doesn’t score as many points as you would have liked, you can switch captain to one of your players who is playing later in the matchday.

Let’s say your first player scores a hat-trick on the first matchday, okay, well that’s awesome, no need to change captain now. But let’s say your Captain blanks, well we can then look at teams playing the following day and change captain to them. Should your second choice captain blank too, well now we can change it to a player on the 3rd day, basically, it will be until you are happy with the double points your player has accumulated.

Another thing to bear in mind is that you can make substitutions between Matchdays, and you can make as many as you like. To put it simply, if you have a player that has blanked, just substitute him with a player on your bench who would either get the same amount of points or better.

Conclusion

The rules in Euro 2020 can seem quite daunting, but if you follow the tips above, it will most certainly make your life a lot easier.

In a nutshell, our current plans are as follows:-

  • Build a team for Matchday 1 with just players who you will feel will get the most points just focusing on the fixtures for this matchday only.
  • Use the Limitless Chip on Matchday 2, we can now build a completely new team with no budget to worry about – go crazy! We now have a feel for the starting players and we can now build our dream team based on the fixtures for this Matchday alone
  • Wildcard on Matchday 3, again, we can simply build a brand new squad for this Matchday only. The following week will be the Round of 16 where we get unlimited transfers anyway.

Have a look at the tips we have suggested above. There are essentially 7 Matchdays through the course of Euro 2020, and with these tactics in mind, we can focus on building a separate team for the first 4 Matchdays.

Here is how the transfers will work in Euro 2020:

PhaseNumber of free transfers
Before tournament startsUnlimited
During group stage2 per matchday
Before round of 16Unlimited
Before quarter-finals3
Before semi-finals5
Before final5

With this in mind, it seems pretty logical that a lot of you will be doing the same or a similar strategy to the one we have suggested.

That being said, we’re really excited to start Euro 2020, especially with it being a year late!
