GW1 Top Three Captaincy Picks

GW1 Top Three Captaincy Picks

@FantasyFootyFix will cover the stats below.

We have red-hot captaincy favourites from Liverpool & Manchester United, who will be battling it out as the top 2 FPL captain choices ahead of Gameweek 1.

Welcome back to “The FPL Way Captaincy Picks” article, where I will be discussing the Top 3 Fantasy Premier League captain options for the Gameweek ahead, as voted for by the FPL community captaincy poll on Twitter.

We have just one day to go until the return of the Premier League. Let’s take a look at that all-important captaincy decision for Gameweek 1.

1. Mohamed Salah sits in 1st place, receiving a staggering 86.6% of the vote.

The Egyptian King returned 231 points last season, scoring 22 goals, one behind the Golden Boot winner Harry Kane.

In that time, no FPL player took more Shots inside the box (99) than Salah, with Kane on (84) & Bruno Fernandes (48).

Throughout the season as a whole, he managed a respectable 6.2 points per game average. He’s been very consistent in the past 4 seasons, with 2017/18 season at his best average of 8.5 points per game. His average total score over the last 4 seasons is a whopping 252.

Salah’s record throughout the past 4 seasons can not be ignored, he’s been very consistent in the past 4 seasons registering 95 goals, 30 assists and 1,011 FPL points recorded: An average of 6.97pts per game.

Let’s look at Salah’s Projected Points overall for the next six Gameweeks. He’s expected to get 39.5 points & in Gameweek 1 Salah is projected to have 6.1 points.

Liverpool are up against newly-promoted Norwich, now returning to the Premier League after getting relegated in 2019/20 season. During that season they conceded the worst goals record with (75), keeping only (5) clean sheets.

Norwich has lost their most creative player, Buendia (£6.5m), to Aston Villa. He scored 15 goals and created 16 assists.

2. Bruno Fernandes sits in 2nd place with 7.5% of the vote.

The Portuguese international played his last 8 Gameweeks achieving just 2 goals and 3 assists, looking very burned out after a long season (he played 58 games in all competitions).

In that time, Bruno recorded (20) Big Chances Created (BCC), that’s more than Salah (12), & Son (14).

Throughout the whole season Fernandes managed to score 18 goals, with 14 assists and a total of 244 FPL points, which is more than Salah (231), he managed a respectable 6.6 points per game.

Let’s look at Bruno’s Projected Points overall for the next six Gameweeks. He’s expected to get 33.3 points and in Gameweek 1 Bruno is projected to have 6.1 points.

His record for Manchester United in the past two seasons can not be ignored. He has scored 26 goals, with 22 assists and a total of 361 FPL points recorded: an average of 7.07 points per game.

Manchester United start their season against Leeds United with a 12:30 kick-off. I don’t think this will be an easy game for either team, but I do think there will be goals.

Leeds United ended last season on a run of four consecutive Premier League wins, with only Arsenal and Liverpool having a longer winning streak (both with five).

3. Kai Havertz sits in 3rd place as my Differential pick.

The German international didn’t have the brightest of starts at the beginning of last season, scoring only one goal, with 1 assist and an average of 3.8 points per game.

Throughout the whole season, Havertz scored 4 goals, with 3 assists and a total of 91 FPL points. If we look at his last seven Gameweeks his form started to improve, this is because Tuchel changed his position to a false 9. During the last few games of the season, he was averaging at 6.4 points per game.

Chelsea kicks off their season with a game against Crystal Palace at Stamford Bridge, they have won 16 of their last 20 Premier League meetings with Palace (Lost 4), including each of the last seven in a row. The only stat working in favour of the Eagles is that they have won two of their last three Premier League season openers, keeping a clean sheet in all three.

Crystal Palace has a new manager, with Patrick Viera taking the reigns. He’s got a massive rebuilding job to do and his first game at Stamford Bridge will be a tough matchup, I think there will be goals in this one.

There you have it FPL managers, Mo Salah is (overwhelmingly) our number 1 captain for Gameweek 1. The FPL community clearly see him as the favourite by voting at 86% of the vote. In my opinion a great pick.

Thank you for reading, wishing you all the best for the new season.

Good luck.
